Happily Ever After anthology

Late last year I was invited to take part in this anthology and wrote a short story called Making Time about a time-traveling goblin. I’m excited that it’s almost ready to go!

Blurb:

In this feel-good fantasy anthology, join the young adventurer Opal, the cunning thief Benna, the goblin warrior Zurt, and others as they each set out to fulfill their respective dreams. Along the way, they embark on thrilling adventures and encounter colorful characters that challenge their beliefs and test their resolve. Happily Ever After will captivate readers with its heartwarming stories of perseverance, determination, and the never-ending pursuit for true happiness.

This April, Raven’s Hollow will be publishing its first ever fantasy anthology! Books will be available in ebook and paperback on all major platforms!

Stay tuned for more detailed and announcements!

Happy Belated New Year

This space won’t be updated much, because when I tried to link to it in my TikTok profile, it came back saying it’s an unsecured site, basically warning people not to visit. Can’t do much about that, I don’t make enough profit from my books to bother getting a real website, so don’t be surprised if these posts aren’t updated very often at all.

That said, here are a few updates from the last little while:

A Queen’s Edict is now available on Audible! The narrator was great to work with, and I’m happy to have the first book of the second series out in the wild. Sales have been off to a slow start, but I’ll keep trying to find readers for it. It is, in my humble opinion, my best book to date. So if you liked the original Empire’s Foundation trilogy, I can almost guarantee that you’ll like this one, too!

I wrote a short story, Making Time, for an anthology. It should be coming out in the next month or so. Super happy with that one… the editors said it’s a gem and trippy. Couldn’t ask for higher praise!

I quit work on another short story. Through the editing process I realized I a) wasn’t the one to write the story, and b) didn’t even like the story anymore. It dealt with Matthew Strongblade, who canonically comes from a society where he was a slave to minotaurs (I hadn’t even thought about the possibility that people might be triggered by this, thinking of real life slavery), and his beginnings. Basically, he killed a citizen in defense of his Master and was sent to the arena to fight for his life. The themes of racial slavery were too much for some people in the group, and others kept trying to modernize it, applying our standards today to an ancient fantasy setting where the protagonist thought of members of other races (e.g., a goblin or orc) as “it” and the group wanted it changed to “they/them.” While I see the value in such changes in every day use, and try very hard to remember not to assume gender identity and use proper pronouns in real life, the story just felt like it wasn’t even going to fit with the rest of my world anymore. That, plus the sheer amount of work involved in being a part of that anthology, and the whole project grew less and less appealing. When I resigned from it, one of my friends said, “If you can’t write about minotaur slavers, what CAN you write about?”

D&D continues to be great fun! Both parties came together recently, and the shenanigans that they’ve been getting up to have been amazing! I won’t spoil it, though… if you want to hear what they’ve been up to, you can check out all the videos from the very beginning on YouTube.

World Book Day chat

I spent some of World Book Day this year chatting with Taneesa Hall from the Ferguson Municipal Public Library, and LJ Cohen, one of my favourite indie authors!

The topic was “Your Story Starts with You” and we focused mainly on how to start writing, especially if you’re not sure where to begin. We did meander into other topics as well, so there’s probably something interesting here for everyone!

Back to WordPress

To be honest, I had forgotten about WordPress. I saw an ad the other day for Duda, started pottering around with the free trial, but didn’t want to spend $15/month on a website when I don’t make that much selling books.

I put a post on TikTok asking for advice and a couple of fellow authors suggested checking out WordPress. As it turns out, my old website was still here and very, very out of date. So I’ve given it an overhaul, updated pages, deleted others, and created a couple of new ones. Still more images to add, but I’ll add those soon.

I don’t anticipate blogging again. Between all the other things I have going on in my life, I just don’t see myself having the time. I’ll probably just populate this landing page with information when there’s big news, such as podcast appearances (I have 1 coming up in May 2022), author talks (I have one coming up April 23rd, 2022), or new releases (I currently have three works in progress – a short story for the Debut anthology (If you’re interested in joining as a writer or artist, contact Chen at cpuchailc@hotmail.com), another short story I dusted off and have been working on for fun, and my 5th novel, A Prophet’s Request. Busy busy!
